We are looking for an experienced Applications Developer to join the Digital and Technology Information and Data team. This opportunity reports to the Product Manager (Information & Data) and is a permanent full-time role based in our Wellington Customhouse.

At Customs we're always looking at how we can use information to make our services the best they can be. As such Customs has a dedicated team to import data from a variety of sources into an Enterprise data warehouse. The warehouse is used to provide reports from the usual Management reports to Business Intelligence to dash boarding and assisting our data analytics team.

We're doing a whole lot more to help protect and promote New Zealand and need an Applications Developer with a good knowledge of warehousing and ETL technologies.

What you're going to need to do well...

  • Three to five years of relevant experience of developing software.
  • The proven ability to work well in a team in a highly collaborative manner.
  • Good knowledge of relevant software development topics, including development languages, methodologies and other related areas (databases, integration technologies, scripting, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and written with the ability to communicate to complex and analytical data to wide ranging audiences at all levels.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective internal relationships as well as identify and establish required external relationships building strength and rapport in maintaining and sustaining those relationships.
  • Ability to organise own work and documentation in a methodical, efficient manner to ensure it is readily available and meets organisational standards.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making capability, including the ability to identify problems, manage or mitigate risks and implement innovative solutions that align with strategic direction.
  • Ability to achieve security clearance to a “Confidential” level is required.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Data Analytics, BI tools) are desirable.

To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident* and be able to obtain and maintain an Organisational Security clearance to Confidential level.

(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last ten years, (including five years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application.

A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last five years, (including ten years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application who has travelled out of New Zealand for short periods of time i.e. > 6 months in one of the following countries: Australia, United Kingdom, United States or Canada and can provide police certificates from those countries for the period of absence.

Because of the nature of Customs’ work you must have a clear Police record. Organisational security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs. You will also be required to pass a drug test.
