Lead people. Improve services. Deliver outcomes that matter

This is an opportunity to lead a newly established function at the heart of some of Council’s most visible and important services. As Business Support & Innovation Coordinator, you will manage and lead Team Leaders and staff who provide business support across City Planning, Building, Municipal Laws, Public Assets, Emergency Management, and Public and Environmental Health.

The role offers significant autonomy, broad organisational influence and the ability to deliver meaningful improvements in systems, customer experience, workforce capability and regulatory service delivery.

About the role and what you’ll do

Reporting to the Manager City Planning, Safety and Amenity, you will set direction and build capability while remaining closely connected to delivery - turning priorities into practical work plans, resolving complex issues, improving systems and leading the team to deliver responsive, consistent and customer-focused outcomes. You’ll:

  • Lead, coach and develop Team Leaders and staff, creating an inclusive, accountable and high-performing culture.
  • Coordinate workloads, resources and priorities across a complex, high-volume service environment.
  • Drive continuous improvement, innovation and systems development to simplify work and strengthen the customer experience.
  • Monitor service performance, customer feedback, risks and emerging pressures, then translate insights into action.
  • Provide authoritative advice and resolve escalated, sensitive or complex customer, regulatory and governance matters.
  • Work across Council to improve integrated service delivery, reporting, compliance and organisational performance.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, governance, risk management and organisational improvement as a senior member of the City Planning, Safety and Amenity leadership group.

This role is part of Banyule’s Leadership Network – you’ll have opportunities to grow your skills and experience of leadership and develop your skills as an organisational leader beyond your role-based expertise.

About you (what you'll bring/what we are looking for)

You are an experienced people leader and hands-on service professional who can move confidently between strategy and delivery. You create clarity, build trust and hold people accountable, while also rolling up your sleeves to solve problems and keep important work moving. You will bring:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in business administration, public administration, local government, management or a related discipline, together with extensive relevant experience as a senior leader.
  • Demonstrated success leading Team Leaders and staff in a complex business support, regulatory, customer service or operational environment.
  • Strong judgement and the ability to balance customer needs, legislative obligations, operational risk and organisational priorities.
  • Experience improving systems, processes, workflows, reporting and service standards.
  • Highly developed communication, influencing, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Confidence using data and digital systems to inform decisions and improve performance.
  • Local government or similarly regulated experience will be highly regarded.
