Ballarat is home to some of Australia’s most historically significant cultural venues including Her Majesty’s Theatre, Civic Hall and the Mining Exchange. City of Ballarat’s cultural venues team is embarking on exciting period of change and growth with Victoria’s oldest theatre re-opening for its 150th anniversary after multiple stages of revitalisation, Civic Hall returning to its live music touring roots and the Mining Exchange being reimagined for the future as a destination for art, performance, design, food, wine and more. 

The Role:

We are looking for a strategic specialist with an entrepreneurial mindset to lead the Commercial and Visitor Experience work area. This critical role sits within the Cultural Venues Leadership Team and will be focused on ensuring unforgettable experiences for guests, aligned with brand and defined markets, every time they connect with these iconic spaces. The role will be key in exploiting opportunities to drive commercial revenue generation for cultural venues through visitor services, business and private events. This will be an opportunity for a dynamic and relationally oriented individual to build the work area’s operations from the ground up in a way that is collaborative and nurturing for the Commercial and Visitor Experience Team. 

This challenging and rewarding role will work cooperatively across the Economy and Experience Division, national arts and live entertainment venues sector and local business community to entrepreneurially drive exceptional experiences for locals and visitors to the Ballarat region.

Key Selection Criteria: 

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Business, hospitality or venue management or related field with relevant work experience or lesser qualification and relevant experience commensurate with the skills and requirements required for the position.  
  • Demonstrated ability to champion, model and promote corporate values. 
  • Extensive experience in a senior visitor experience and/or commercial development role in a live entertainment/arts/stadium venue context with multi-faceted knowledge and experience including a high-level ability to identify gaps and opportunities.  
  • Extensive experience in the development and implementation of visitor experience operational policies, processes and procedures. 
  • Demonstrated experience in customer experience including customer profiling, journey mapping and human centred design approaches. 
  • Demonstrated experience in the management and implementation of enterprise systems. 
  • Demonstrated experience in resource management including budget planning, project budget management and achieving revenue targets. 
  • Ability to effectively manage, coach, mentor, develop and motivate staff and promote an environment that supports team building, skills development and best practice.
