Job Description

Your new career
The First Nations Engagement Advisor sits within the Community Health and Development Team. The team are integral in contributing to Council's purpose of a thriving community and environment, and work with internal and external partners to pursue community development and social equity opportunities. 

The First Nations Engagement Advisor plays a critical role in creating space and opportunities for First Nations voices to be heard and have influence over Councils work, including nurturing important relationships with Aboriginal Organisations and the broader First Nations community. 

To be considered for this role you will need to demonstrate a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture, history and legislation, and the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. An ability to communicate sensitively and effectively is imperative.

 

What you will bring to the role
We are currently seeking a First Nations Engagement Advisor who is dedicated and driven to make a positive impact on all people they work with. The successful person will have extensive experience in working and creating meaningful relationships with First Nations stakeholders and community members. This person will need to have experience in sharing cultural knowledge and be able to apply an empathetic approach to building the organisations capacity and knowledge of cultural heritage and First Nations culture, practices and people. 


To be successful in the role you will have: 

  • Experience working with First Nations stakeholders, including Registered Aboriginal Parties and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO)
  • Experience working within the Reconciliation Action Plan framework, including the development, delivery and evaluation of Reconciliation Action Plans
  • A strong ability to provide training, support and advice to organisational leaders and colleagues on a broad range of First Nations topics, including cultural awareness and cultural heritage. 


Key selection criteria
Mandatory qualifications, experience and requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in working and building rapport with First Nations community. 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, driving progress, and reporting on Reconciliation Action Plans. 
  • Experience providing cultural advice, training and support to others.
  • Understanding of cultural safety protocols and practices and the ability to make recommendations to improve these in an organisational setting. 
  • A current Working With Children Check
  • You have the permanent right to live and work in Australia
  • Police Check results that are suitable for this position (will be arranged by Surf Coast Shire Council). 
    A complete international criminal history check is required if the person has worked or lived overseas for any period of time OR a complete national criminal history check is required if the person has only ever worked in Australia.
