The Urban Recreation and Natural Assets Division (URNA) consists of three teams responsible for developing policy and systems that inform council's strategic development, management and future planning of council's buildings, lighting and electrical assets, natural and recreational assets.
About the Role
As the Open Space Technical Lead, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our city's open spaces. You will be responsible for developing and implementing asset management strategies, optimising infrastructure performance, and ensuring that recreational spaces meet both current and future community needs. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, strategic vision, and strong leadership to oversee urban landscapes, pathways, and green infrastructure projects. Your work will directly impact the quality, safety, and functionality of public spaces, making them more accessible, sustainable, and enjoyable for the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive the development and implementation of the Open Space Asset Management Plan, aligning with organisational objectives and future community needs.
- Lead the planning and design of urban streetscapes, formal and informal recreational spaces, playspaces, and pathways to create functional and inviting environments.
- Ensure open space assets are managed effectively to achieve the lowest lifecycle costs while maximising community benefits.
- Provide expert advice on the development, maintenance, and sustainability of public spaces, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and risk management frameworks.
- Implement cutting-edge data collection and sensor technology to inform decision-making and improve open space asset performance.
- Oversee the planning, design, and execution of open space infrastructure projects, ensuring quality outcomes within budget and timelines.
- Identify and secure funding opportunities from government programs to support open space initiatives.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, community groups, and industry experts, to develop and implement open space strategies.
- Develop and manage risk mitigation strategies for pathways, playspaces, and other open space assets to ensure safety and sustainability.
- Drive innovation in urban design, sustainability practices, and asset management strategies to enhance service delivery and community satisfaction.
About You:
- Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Resource Management, or a related field.
- Extensive experience in strategic planning, open space management, and urban infrastructure development.
- Strong analytical skills with knowledge of data-driven decision-making tools.
- Expertise in asset management, risk management, and project planning.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Ability to manage and oversee multidisciplinary teams and large-scale projects.
- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, and best practices in open space management.
