The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Development Engineer to lead our Development Engineering team. In this key role, you will oversee all engineering and public infrastructure matters related to private development projects across the MidCoast. You’ll ensure projects meet the highest standards of compliance while delivering excellent customer service. This is your chance to contribute to the sustainable growth of the region, ensuring the long-term integrity of public assets. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the Development Engineering team, driving innovative solutions and maintaining high standards for engineering assessments and advice.
  • Managing the assessment of development applications and applications for civil works while ensuring compliance with Council's infrastructure-related conditions through development engineering inspections / surveillance.
  • Providing strategic leadership to implement best practices in development engineering and public infrastructure management.
  • Developing systems to monitor and report on the team’s performance and ensuring services are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Supporting a positive organisational culture by fostering collaboration across teams, mentoring staff, and driving continuous improvement in processes and standards.

What you’ll bring

  • Qualifications in Civil Engineering or a related field and extensive experience in a similar local government role.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing teams within a community-focused or politically sensitive setting.
  • Strong knowledge of legislative and professional requirements related to development engineering.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to manage stakeholders and resolve conflicts.
  • A track record of delivering projects on time and within budget, with demonstrated success in driving operational efficiencies.

Salary:

  • Salary range: $127,700 - $153,200 p.a.+ superannuation (negotiable based on experience).
  • Additional 3.5% Civil Liability Allowance on top of the base salary.
  • Vehicle arrangement: A fully maintained leaseback vehicle for both business and private use. (Council will provide you with a leaseback vehicle for an annual fee calculated as 20% of the gross purchase price. This is a fully maintained vehicle for both business and full private use with no additional expenses in normal use).

Location: This position is based at our state-of-the-art Administration Centre, Yalawanyi Ganya, in Taree. You may also be required to work across other MidCoast Council sites.

Tenure: Permanent, Full-Time.
