About the Role

What we are looking for: 

We are seeking an exceptional and self-motivated person to lead the development and implementation of Council’s strategic waste management strategies, programs and initiatives. You will have a strong knowledge of all waste management issues, and have excellent communication and engagement skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with the team and the wider organisation on a diverse portfolio of waste management focused strategies, policies, programs and projects.

Your primary functions in this position include:

  • Effectively leading the development and implementation of strategic waste management strategies, programs and initiatives across the municipality.
  • Ensuring Council has programs and strategies in place to continually reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, and the extent of dumped rubbish across the municipality.
  • Conducting research and analysis on waste management trends, impacts and mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborating with government agencies, non-profits, and private sector partners to improve waste management outcomes.
  • Identifying and assisting in the implementation of new environmentally friendly means of waste disposal.
  • Identifying and implementing circular economy opportunities for both Council and the community.
  • Overseeing the effective planning and implementation of the additional glass bin and kerbside reform, including the development of an educational program for residents.
  • Overseeing the effective planning and implementation of advanced waste management activities and programs for Greater Dandenong, in conjunction with other Councils in the South East Metropolitan Advanced Waste Processing (SEMAWP) group.
  • Providing guidance, support and education to staff, residents, businesses and other stakeholders regarding strategic waste management related matters.


About You

To be successful in this role you will have extensive knowledge, experience and skills in the strategic waste management field, including a strong understanding of the financial implications and opportunities regarding waste management. You will have demonstrated high level project management experience, and strong verbal and written communication skills are a must, as is the ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders and to work independently.

You may be required to undertake practical testing, work preference profiling / psychometric testing, functional capacity assessment (physical) or aptitude testing.

The successful candidate will be asked to produce a clear Working with Children Check, current Victorian Drivers Licence and will be asked to consent to a national police check (and where relevant an ‘international criminal history check’), subject to the operation of spent conviction laws.
