The Opportunity
As the Waste and Compliance Services Coordinator, you will play a critical role in leading, developing, implementing and reviewing a range of waste management and compliance programs to ensure Council meets its legislative, regulatory, contractual and policy obligations.
  
You will oversee the safe and efficient delivery of waste operations, support resource recovery, encourage waste avoidance, and promote a clean, safe and sustainable environment. This position ensures services meet community expectations and corporate performance standards while contributing to environmental and public health outcomes.
  
Key Responsibilities
 

  • Responsible for the operation and management of resource recovery and waste services and facilities;
  • Create and Implement quality compliance reports that meet statutory obligations within identified timeframes (e.g. Queensland Waste Data System (QWDS) reports);
  • Drive innovative initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact;
  • Engage with diverse stakeholders to foster collaboration and improve community relations;
  • Encourage continual improvement, seeking opportunities to enhance service delivery for our community;
  • Demonstrate customer centric behaviours that support the delivery of positive customer experiences and organisational effectiveness;
  • Promote and build understanding of the team’s purpose and expertise with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Support the professional development and growth of direct reports through coaching and development initiatives;
  • Manage Council’s resources responsibly, with a focus on sustainability and safety;
  • Apply a strong customer service focus combined with a results orientated approach;
  • Demonstrate financial acumen with ability to manage budgets effectively;
  • Manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently, ensuring timely delivery;
  • Ensure compliance with state government Waste Levy requirements, including waste data submissions through the Queensland Waste Data System; and develop, implement and review best practice waste data management practices;
  • Develop, implement and review best practice waste data management, maximising the functionality within Council’s Mandalay Waste data system; and
  • Manage the engagement and oversight of external contractors.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a proactive and experienced professional with qualifications in environmental science, waste management or a related field. You will have a solid background in managing waste operations and compliance, ideally within a local government or similar setting. You are organised, solutions-focused, and confident working both independently and as part of a team. Your strong communication skills and knowledge of relevant legislation support your ability to deliver effective outcomes. Experience with TechnologyOne and Mandalay Technologies will be highly regarded.
  
Key Selection Criteria

  • Qualifications in Environmental Science, Waste Management, or related discipline (or equivalent experience);
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation including the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act and Environmental Protection Act;
  • Demonstrated experience in managing waste operations and environmental compliance in a local government or similar environment;
  • Experience in project management, reporting, and budget preparation
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills;
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to work independently with limited supervision;
  • Experience with TechnologyOne (Ci, CiAnywhere) and Mandalay Technologies suite (Ticketing, Systems Admin, Facilities Management) (Highly Desirable); and
  • Current C-Class driver’s licence.

General Salary Information:

This position is classified as Level 6 under the Hinchinbrook Shire Council Local Government Officers (Stream A) Certified Agreement.

The salary is $96,956 per annum plus superannuation. $51.43 per hour.
