The Role

As an Environmental Compliance and Protection Officer, you will play a key role in protecting public health, the environment and local amenity across the Canterbury-Bankstown community.

Working as part of Council's Environmental Compliance and Protection team, you will investigate environmental and land use compliance matters, undertake site inspections, assess evidence and deliver practical, timely solutions through education, advice and enforcement. You will manage a diverse caseload, engage with residents and stakeholders, and contribute to positive compliance outcomes that support a safe, healthy and sustainable community.

Reporting to the Team Leader Environmental Compliance and Protection, you will bring sound judgement, strong communication skills and a collaborative approach while contributing to a team culture focused on accountability, continuous improvement and exceptional community service.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Investigate environmental, public health and land use compliance matters across the Canterbury-Bankstown area.

  • Conduct inspections, gather and assess evidence, and determine appropriate compliance outcomes.

  • Deliver practical solutions through education, advice, corrective action and enforcement activities.

  • Manage a diverse caseload from initial investigation through to resolution, documentation and follow-up.

  • Build positive relationships with residents, businesses and stakeholders through clear and respectful communication.

  • Prepare reports, correspondence, statutory notices and evidence briefs to support regulatory outcomes.

  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external agencies to address environmental and compliance issues.

  • Contribute to a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and exceptional customer service.

You will have

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related discipline.

  • Experience in environmental health, compliance, regulatory investigations or a similar field.

  • Sound knowledge of relevant environmental, planning and public health legislation.

  • Strong investigative skills with the ability to assess evidence and make informed decisions.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Experience preparing reports, regulatory documentation and evidence for legal proceedings.

  • Customer-focused approach with strong problem-solving and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Current Class C Driver Licence.

The salary for this position starts from $97,327 (Grade G, Step 1) + Car Allowance + 12% super.
