About Us 

The Council

The Council consists of a mayor and eight councillors who are elected by the district to represent and work for the people of Central Hawke's Bay. The councillors provide governance to the district council. Councillors are here to represent your views.

The Council has one staff member: the chief executive of the Central Hawke's Bay District Council. The chief executive is solely responsible to the elected members for all policy advice and management of Council affairs.

Governance

Governance is about the checks and balances to keep the district council on track to achieve its goals. It involves the process of making and enforcing decisions within the organisation. Effective governance is essential for maintaining order, achieving objectives and addressing the needs of the community. It promotes transparency and adapts to changing circumstances ensuring Council remains responsive and resilient in achieving its goals.
 

The Council provides governance that ensures the chief executive can manage the district council to:

Focus on growing the economy, by developing jobs, attracting and enabling business success, while ensuring the district is a desirable place to live for current and new residents, through smart growth initiatives.

The Local Government Act 2002 (commonly known as the LGA) defines local government in New Zealand. The purpose of the LGA is to provide for democratic and effective local government that recognises the diversity of New Zealand communities.
