Welcome! to the District Council of Mount Remarkable!

Our District covers an area of approximately 3422.8km² within the Grey electorate, divided into two Wards, Telowie and Willochra (for Ward boundary maps, click HERE. This is a large area considering we have an approximate population of just under 3000 people as per the last Census which can be found on the Australian Bureau of Statistics Website. This means we have plenty of room with around about 1.2km² per person if we spread every person out evenly across the District!

Most of our residents reside within our townships in close proximity to each other, with the remainder on farms and properties. No matter where people live within the District Council of Mount Remarkable, we have strong friendships, family bonds and community spirit.

We have 6 major towns in the District - Booleroo Centre, Melrose, Port Germein, Weeroona Island, Wilmington and Wirrabara. Each of these towns has its own distinguishing features, conveniences and many different community and sporting groups. For example, Booleroo Centre has many conveniences and services in the town such as the hospital, medical centre, IGA and nursing home, whereas Wirrabara has the Bluff with it’s amazing views, a bakery well worth taking a break for and some amazing silo art.

We also have many minor townships such as Appila, Bruce, Murray Town and Willowie just to name a few.  These towns whilst smaller are still well worth a visit. Some points of interest include Appila Springs which is a beautiful hidden gem falling just in the Northern Areas Council jurisdiction.  Murray Town has a campground which is great for the weary traveller (please take regular breaks and be safe on our roads) and Willowie offers a unique BnB where you can interact with a variety of animals including goats.

Our main source of economy is through agriculture and mixed farming which is represented by grazing, cropping, mixed farming, horticulture and forestry. Cycling, including Mountain Biking is a rapidly growing industry within the region. There are bike trails throughout Mount Remarkable National Park, including the Epic Trail which covers approximately 38kms and takes 6 to 8 hours to complete. The trails cover varying degrees of difficulty to suit every cyclist, whether an amateur, pro or a family. There is also the Southern Flinders Rail Trail which connects all major towns on the eastern side of the mountain ranges. It spans all the way from Laura to Wilmington, making for a very scenic, comfortable and safe ride for the cycling enthusiast – allowing you to stay off the highways and away from traffic.

Go for a drive anywhere throughout the District and you are guaranteed to see sheep everywhere. Where there are no sheep, there are crops, cows or cyclists. If there is no farm, but plenty of trees, you are more than likely looking at a National Park or forest. We’ve got it all!

Those who live within the District have the privilege of some of the best scenery in Australia with back drops of mountains and hills - are we biased? Definitely! The country here changes colours as the seasons go by and the days phase from sunrise to sunset. If you look closely, you’ll notice the deep blues, purples and deep greens in the mountains and hills in the evening. Or the pale straw yellow against rich reddish browns and deep gum greens in the summer. Or even the serenity of blues, jades and green coloured sea against white sand and brown seaweed in Port Germein. This District is so varied in scenery and colour, it’s an artist and photographers’ heaven!
