Statutory Enforcement Officer

Step into a specialist statutory enforcement role supporting safe, compliant and high-quality building outcomes across Banyule.

This is an opportunity for an experienced building professional to join the Building team at Banyule City Council as a Statutory Enforcement Officer. This role plays an important part in Council’s statutory compliance responsibilities, with a focus on investigating and resolving building-related complaints, applying relevant legislation and supporting safe outcomes for the community.

Working closely with the Municipal Building Surveyor and colleagues across Council, you’ll use your technical knowledge, sound judgement and communication skills to manage complex or sensitive matters, provide authoritative advice and contribute to a customer-focused, accountable and collaborative team culture.

What you’ll do in this role:

• Lead the investigation and resolution of building-related complaints, including complex, sensitive or high-risk matters.
• Undertake site inspections, gather evidence and assess compliance with relevant building, planning and local law requirements.
• Manage enforcement action, including preparing notices, reports and high-quality prosecution briefs where required.
• Provide specialist advice to customers, stakeholders and internal staff on enforcement processes, legislative requirements and compliance pathways.
• Represent Council in relevant legal proceedings, tribunals or forums when required.
• Maintain accurate records, monitor statutory obligations and contribute to continuous improvement within the Building Department.

What you'll bring/what we are looking for:

• Qualification as a Building Surveyor or Inspector holding registration in the relevant category and class with the Building Practitioners Board.
• Completion of the Degree or Diploma in Building Surveying
• Strong technical knowledge of the Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2018 and associated legislation.
• Experience in building inspections, investigations and enforcement activities, including managing complex compliance matters through to resolution.
• Sound judgement, problem-solving and decision-making skills in a regulatory environment.
• Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear correspondence, reports, notices and court documentation.
• Strong interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to work professionally with a wide range of people.
• The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and contribute positively to team outcomes.

Pre-employment check requirements

• Current Victorian Drivers Licence.
• Registered practitioner with the Building and Plumbing Commission in the category of Building Surveyor or Building Inspector.
