Building Compliance Officer

Te Wero – The Challenge

As a Building Compliance Officer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring buildings across the Far North meet the standards of the Building Act 2004 and other relevant legislation.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Conducting efficient and effective inspections and audits to assess building compliance.

• Respond to complaints by conducting investigations, collecting relevant evidence, facilitating compliance outcomes, and implementing enforcement actions where breaches of regulatory requirements are identified.

• Process applications for Certificates of Acceptance and Building Consent Exemptions, ensuring alignment with relevant legislation and regulatory standards.

• Maintaining technical competence and committing to ongoing professional development.

• Engaging with stakeholders in a culturally respectful and enabling manner to achieve compliant outcomes.

• Accurately recording time and costs associated with inspections to support cost recovery.

You’ll also:

• Apply quality assurance guidance and documentation in line with Council’s systems.

• Understand and operate within your powers as an Authorised Officer, respecting delegated authority limits.

I ā koe - About You

We’re looking for someone who brings a mix of technical know-how, cultural awareness, and a community-first mindset.

Ideally, you’ll have:

• Hold a technical qualification relevant to building compliance functions and/or possess experience in a construction or regulatory compliance role.

• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the Building Act 2004, the New Zealand Building Code, the Local Government Act 2002, and other relevant statutory frameworks governing building compliance and local authority functions.

• Familiarity with Pathways, Web-map, or similar GIS and information systems.

• Exposure to economic development in a local authority setting and knowledge of process improvement methodologies.

• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• Extensive knowledge of Māori issues, a sound understanding of culturally diverse communities, and the principles

• of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
