Building Control Officer (Building Consents)

Te Wero – The Challenge

As a Building Control Officer, you will be at the forefront of ensuring that all building work within the Far North meets the highest standards of safety and compliance. Your responsibilities will include:

• Assessing and approving building consent applications to ensure compliance with legislation and technical requirements.

• Conducting on-site inspections to verify that construction work aligns with approved plans and meets the Building Code.

• Providing expert advice and guidance to customers, contractors, and stakeholders on compliance matters.

• Maintaining accurate records and documentation to support transparency and accountability in all processes.

• This role requires a balance of technical expertise, sound judgment, and strong interpersonal skills to uphold regulatory standards while supporting positive outcomes for our community.

Key Accountabilities:

• Perform building control functions in accordance with the requirements of the Building Act 2004, Building Code and any applicable Regulations

• Maintain and demonstrate an enabling mind set, with consideration to cultural and social differences when interacting with stakeholders to achieve compliant outcomes

• Self-manage to achieve duties in a timely manner while adhering to the FNDC Quality Manual for Accreditation, conduct policy and the BOINZ ethics statement

• Develop and maintain competency in accordance with the National Competency Assessment System in order to perform building control functions

• Contribute to an inclusive and collaborative team environment and maintain an awareness of and apply the principles of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

• An excellent communicator, with strong listening skills and the ability to convey information clearly in both written and verbal forms.

• Holder of a current, full driver’s licence.

• Experienced in processing commercial building consent applications and hold a current commercial processing competency to COM1, COM2 or COM3.

Candidates who demonstrate exceptional qualifications and extensive experience may be considered for appointment at the level of Senior Building Officer. This senior designation reflects the advanced responsibilities associated with the role and will be accompanied by a remuneration package aligned with the higher level of expertise and accountability.

• The salary for this position is Grade 15 within Council's salary structure (Band: $81,304 to $95,652 pro rata per annum) dependent on qualifications and experience, plus Kiwi Saver.
