About the role

As the Collections Assistant for Hutt City Council, you’ll play a key part in the behind-the-scenes mahi that keeps our library collections running smoothly. Your work will support all nine Neighbourhood Hubs and Libraries and help ensure our community has access to high-quality materials across Lower Hutt. This role is based at the War Memorial Library and is fixed term from January 2026 to 30 June 2026.

You’ll enjoy a varied mix of tasks, including:

  • Processing, accessioning and checking new library materials
  • Managing periodicals, deliveries and subscription renewals
  • Coordinating shelving inventory and supporting hub staff with shelving changes
  • Managing invoices, purchase orders and collection supplies
  • Supporting the Heritage Specialist with accessions, indexing, digitisation and content creation
  • Assisting with cataloguing and indexing alongside our Cataloguing & Technical Services Librarian
  • Contributing to continuous improvement and helping streamline collection processes

Every day is different — you may be unpacking new items in the morning, organising offsite shelving in the afternoon, and supporting heritage work by the end of the day.


About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in libraries or library technical services
  • Strong practical experience with physical processing, serials, and accounts payable
  • Proficiency with library management systems (ideally Spydus)
  • Excellent relationship-management skills and the ability to work collaboratively
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence using systems and processes
  • A passion for accuracy, organisation and great customer service
  • Flexibility, adaptability and a commitment to continuous improvement

Experience or qualifications in libraries, customer service, administration, IT, or copy cataloguing are an advantage.
