Communications Advisor

The Far North District Council is seeking a Communications Advisor to join the Office of the Mayor. This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of local government, supporting the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Councillors in delivering initiatives that matter most to our communities.

Te Wero – The Challenge

As Communications Advisor, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping how the Mayor’s Office connects with the people of the Far North. You’ll develop and implement strategic communication plans, manage media relations, and create compelling content that reflects the Mayors’ vision and Council priorities.

Your mahi will include:

• Strategic Communications & Media Relations: Craft clear, consistent messaging and act as the key liaison with media.

• Community Engagement & Events: Plan and deliver initiatives that bring communities together and celebrate our identity.

• Content Creation & Storytelling: Manage social media, produce multimedia content, and champion a storytelling culture.

• Enhancing Māori Engagement: Use your knowledge of te reo Māori and te ao Māori to strengthen relationships and ensure authentic engagement. 

• This role is fast paced, varied, and deeply rewarding. You’ll be at the forefront of civic events, public consultations, and engagement strategies that make a real impact.

I ā koe - About You

We need someone who is:

• A strategic thinker with exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

• Digitally savvy, confident in managing social media and online campaigns.

• Culturally competent, with an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a commitment to engaging meaningfully with Māori communities.

• Experienced in media relations, public engagement, and event coordination.

• Politically astute, with sound judgment and the ability to navigate sensitive issues.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field.

• 3+ years in communications or public relations, ideally in government or community-focused organisations.

• IAP2 certification or equivalent experience in public engagement is highly desirable.

• A current driver’s licence is essential.

• The salary for this position is Grade 15 within Council's salary structure (Band: $81,304 to $95,652 pro rata per annum) dependent on qualifications and experience, plus Kiwi Saver.
