The Far North District Council is seeking an exceptional Executive Officer to provide high-level strategic advice and operational oversight in the Office of the Mayor.

This is your opportunity to work at the heart of local government, partnering with the Mayor and Elected Members to deliver on priorities that matter most to our communities. You’ll be the trusted advisor, the connector, and the driver of outcomes that make a real difference.

As Executive Officer, you will:

  • Provide strategic and political support – Advise the Mayor and Deputy Mayor on council-wide issues, priorities, and initiatives. Help articulate and communicate the Mayors’ vision and goals.

  • Lead and manage the Office of the Mayor – Ensure delivery of outcomes, improve workflows, and maximise productivity.

  • Facilitate governance and decision-making – Prepare executive briefings, review policy and strategy, and support implementation of elected member directives.

  • Drive communications and engagement – Draft speeches, media statements, and manage public image strategies, including social media and community outreach.

  • Build strong relationships – Act as a key liaison with iwi, community groups, government agencies, and other councils.

  • Maintain integrity and confidentiality – Uphold the highest ethical standards in all interactions.

I ā koe - About You

What we’re looking for

  • Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant field.

  • 8–10+ years’ experience in or with central, regional, or local government at a senior management level.

  • 5+ years in a senior advisory capacity (public or private sector).

  • Strong knowledge of governance, policy, risk, legal, finance, and operational areas.

  • Cultural competency and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles; fluency or interest in te reo Māori is highly valued.

  • Politically astute, resilient, and skilled in managing complex, sensitive decisions under pressure.

  • A collaborative leader with exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • The salary for this position is Grade 22 within Council's salary structure (Band: $138,958 to $163,480 pro rata per annum) dependent on qualifications and experience, plus Kiwi Saver.
