Water Supply Serviceperson

As a Water Serviceperson, you’ll be part of the team that ensures Napier’s water supply systems operate safely, reliably, and to a high standard. This is a practical, varied role where no two days are the same — from planned maintenance and inspections to responding to urgent issues that help keep our city running smoothly. 

You’ll work closely with your teammates, contractors, and the community, delivering quality workmanship, great customer service, and a proactive approach to keeping our infrastructure in top condition. With opportunities to develop new skills, use a range of tools and equipment, and contribute to essential city services, this role offers meaningful, hands-on work that directly supports the wellbeing of our residents.

Te Āheinga - The Opportunity

• Work on a variety of maintenance, repair, inspection, and construction tasks that keep Napier’s water network operating effectively.

He kōrero mōhou - About You

• At least three years of secondary education and ideally hold a relevant qualification (such as the National Certificate in Utilities Maintenance/Water Reticulation), or you’re committed to completing one.
• A minimum of three years’ hands-on experience in water reticulation maintenance and construction within a Council, Local Authority, or civil water industry environment.
• A full clean driver’s licence (with heavy vehicle endorsement) and confidence operating small plant and tools, including plate compactors, jackhammers, concrete mixers, and similar equipment.
• Reliable, safety-focused, and ready to participate in rostered call-outs, responding to issues promptly and working effectively with residents, contractors, and internal teams.

This is a permanent, full time position working 42.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday. You will be based out of our operational site in Onekawa.

The hourly rate for this role is between $29.53-$32.05 (plus KiwiSaver if eligible), which equates to around $65,000– $71,000 per year. The final offer will depend on your skills and experience.

If you don’t yet have the level of experience we’re looking for, we’re open to bringing you on as a trainee — the hourly rate for this pathway is $27.81–$30.18 (plus KiwiSaver, if applicable).
