About Council

Southland District Council is responsible for 11% of New Zealand's land area, including the beautiful Fiordland and Rakiura/Stewart Island. We manage everything from roads and water to parks, facilities and the social, cultural, economic and environmental wellbeing of more than 30 diverse communities.

Council is navigating a period of significant change across the local government sector, with major reforms and shifts in key legislation shaping our future. This environment calls for innovation, strong partnerships, and the agility to adapt, while continuing to deliver exceptional customer experiences and meaningful outcomes for our communities.

With a team of 200+ people across Invercargill and seven district offices, we're committed to leading through change and strengthening the services that matter most to our region.

About the Role

As one of our People and Culture Coordinators, you'll play a key role in keeping our people systems running smoothly and ensuring a great experience for our staff. Payroll is a shared responsibility within the team, so experience with payroll processing and an understanding of employment and payroll legislation will be an advantage.

This is a fast‑paced role suited to a highly organised, tech‑savvy experienced administrator who enjoys variety. You'll support recruitment, onboarding, training and wellbeing initiatives, maintain our people databases and systems, help with internal communications, and contribute to wider People and Culture projects once you're up and running.

To succeed, you'll bring great relationship skills, attention to detail, professionalism, discretion and a genuine people‑focused approach. You'll model Council's values of working together, creating opportunities, taking ownership and being proud to belong. If you have the skills we need but prefer part‑time hours, we're open to exploring a job share arrangement for experienced candidates.

Why Join Us?

We invest in our people through development opportunities, competitive market‑aligned remuneration and a supportive environment that encourages personal growth.
