About the role

We are looking for our newest team member to join us at Ballarat Botanical Gardens.

The engine room of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, our Nursery produces & maintains more than 12,000 plants a year for our year-round conservatory displays, featuring six documented collections and Ballarat’s renown registered begonia collections.

Working with a passionate team, you would help propagate, grow and maintain nursery collections and complimentary plants, and then bring them to life in our year-round, much visited conservatory displays. If you wish to showcase your design skills, our team also creates three unique Conservatory Floral Displays every year, including the Begonia Display, the centrepiece of Ballarat’s
Begonia Festival.

We are passionate about integrated pest management, nursery accreditation, work in a minimal chemical-use environment, and are actively involved in small scale indigenous plant conservation projects, and thrive on propagation of plants for our heritage listed gardens.

About you

The ideal candidate will hold a Certificate III in Horticulture or Parks and Gardens, with experience in production nursery plant maintenance, plant propagation across a broad range of species, and developing and maintaining high‑quality floral displays.

In this hands‑on horticultural role, you’ll draw on your trade skills to maintain parks, gardens and open spaces to an exceptional standard. You’ll operate and maintain a variety of mechanical equipment including ride‑on mowers, aerators, rotary hoes, utilities and trailers while carrying out mowing, weed control, planting, pruning, cultivation and other routine horticultural tasks. You’ll also confidently use light equipment such as brush cutters, hedge trimmers, edgers and sprayers, and apply horticultural chemicals safely and accurately. A strong understanding of workplace safety, traffic management near roadways, and the ability to interpret work instructions and maintain accurate records is essential.
