Banyule City Council is looking for a Capital Accountant to join our Strategic Finance and Performance team. This is a great opportunity to play a key role in the financial stewardship of Business unit budgets, Council’s capital works, fixed assets and development contributions functions.

About the role and what you’ll do

In this parental leave cover role, you will manage Council’s Fixed Asset Register, provide specialist asset accounting advice (business partnering), support capital works forecasting and reporting, and partner with stakeholders across Council to strengthen financial planning and decision-making. You will also lead Development Contributions Plan functions and support accurate, compliant and timely reporting.

This is a role for someone who enjoys both the technical detail and the bigger picture — someone who can interpret accounting standards, analyse financial data, build trusted relationships and provide advice that helps Council make informed investment decisions.

This role is part of Banyule’s Leadership Network – you’ll have opportunities to grow your skills and experience of leadership in a Local Government context and develop your skills as an organisational leader beyond your role-based expertise.

What you’ll be working on:

• manage and maintain accurate asset information across acquisition, valuation, depreciation and disposal processes
• prepare fixed asset and capital works reporting, including forecasts, variance analysis and statutory reporting
• provide financial business partnering advice across budgeting, forecasting, reporting and performance analysis
• work closely with project managers, the Capital Delivery Team and the Asset Management Team to support Council’s Capital Works and Initiatives Program
• lead and support Development Contributions Plan operations, reporting and continuous improvement
• contribute to financial governance, audit readiness, policy input and process improvement.

About you (what you'll bring/what we are looking for)

We’re looking for someone with a tertiary qualification in accounting or finance, who has completed or is working towards CA or CPA qualification. You’ll also have:

• Proven experience and demonstrated capability in asset accounting, forecasting and financial reporting.
• Proven experience in corporate project management.
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and ability to proactively build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated excellent communication skills, particularly when providing advice on complex financial issues.
• Leadership skills, including the ability to effectively manage staff performance and development.
• General knowledge of Development Contributions Plans
